Every Form Seeks a Place Before It Seeks a Name

What was Void before names came into being?

What first held the Edge?

What gave rise to the Within?

Void. Edge. Threshold.

There was a time when nothing remained apart from anything else.

Not because everything was united, but because nothing had yet learned to distinguish itself from what was other.

Then came the moment when continuity could no longer sustain itself.

It required an edge.

And space allowed it.

Interval. Consistency. Persistence.

Then arose the necessity of sustaining difference.

The first Gesture came into being.

Perhaps a presence ceased to pass unhindered through space.

Or perhaps continuity encountered resistance for the very first time.

It did not build.

It indicated.

Not a place.

A way of dwelling.

And space changed by Remaining what it was.

From that moment onward, patterns of insistence emerged that no one had ever learned.

They belonged neither to intention nor to will.

They simply returned.

Dwelling. Sustaining. Delimiting. Encircling. Containing.

Receiving.Gathering. Stacking. Repeating. Enveloping.

Covering. Sheltering. Completing.

Filling. Emptying. Stitching. Mending. Binding. Unravelling.

Sedimenting. Folding. Fracturing. Adhering. Filtering. Settling.

Emerging. Incubating. Gravitating. Resonating. Enduring.

Converging.

Diverging. Shifting. Recognizing.

Trace. Repetition. Duration.

Each altered the relation between things.

And things began to recognize one another differently.

There were no words.

There were echoes.

For a time they remained dispersed.

Then they gradually found one another.

They did not merge.

They brushed against each other.

And each encounter altered the resonance of the one before.

Sediment. Density. Persistence.

Density is what remains once everything else has settled away.

Density precedes form.

And by enduring, an inside came into being.

For the first time, there was an inside.

Then Recognition occurred.

Recognition no longer came from outside.

Condition recognized itself as condition.

Only much later came the name.

The name did not open the world.

It arrived after it.

For only that which has learned to endure can truly be named. To name was to draw near.

To name was to distinguish.

To name was to attempt to sustain what gesture had already recognized before language ever could.

Thread. Weave. Fold.

Every name was born already incomplete.

Every name left a remainder.

A Latency.

Something remained folded where the name could no longer reach.

We are not witnessing the birth of something new.

We are remembering that first Gesture.

Wool. Stitch. Dust.

Perhaps it is then that space recognises us once more before we ourselves are capable of naming it.

Only afterwards does language arrive.

And with it, meaning begins once again to shift.

Ever since, language has continued to pursue what it never truly brought into being.
